Theme description

Chairs: Oddgeir Tveiten, Michael Shanks

The research group has a focus on theory, in a broad sense. Including education in a wide perspective on learning and learning societies, the group invites papers on a wide range of theoretical matters. The study of society and technological change signals an orientation towards a sociological scope. Yet, studies of how students learn using contemporary media devices could equally be a focus on such topics as class room interaction, socialization, visual communication, eLearning, ePedagogy, design-centered learning and much more. Perspectives on impacts of technology and critiques of education technology are welcome. Studies of 21st. century skills, game-based learning, media literacy and other topics are welcome to the group, provided the main focus is theoretical and cutting across established disciplinary lines -- opening up a wider perspective on the uses and relevance of social science and humanities in the study of learning, technology and society.

Research group #1 invites comparative studies, papers framed within cultural studies and the media, as well as papers framed within pedagogy and design perspectives. The general focus might involve comparative, critical, historical, textual, interactional and philosophical dimensions. As the theme of WLS 2018 suggests, attendees are invited to reflect on the virtual, visual and viral aspects of next-generation learning designs. This may entail a technology and media focus, but to repeat: The group particularly invites cross-cutting theory perspectives.
