Welcome to World Learning Summit2016

WORLDS OF LEARNING
Technology relates to education in about the same manner the stirrup relates to riding a horse. You can ride bareback and with a saddle. You can use a horse for warfare. You can think of the stirrup as an aspect of technology, or just some sort of thing. Use it or don't. But what a stirrup is only makes sense if you see it in context. If you know something about the history of its use, the future may be less difficult to predict.
In the same manner, we may think of the book as an aspect of technology, and reading an outcome of a particular kind of medium. We may think of learning and education as a means of human growth and flourishing, but also as a means of propaganda and propagation of less desirable ideals.
In short, education and technology is everything. The question is what we want it to be for us? Many contemporary debates on the massive changes now taking place in the development of learning technologies, dive into reflections on the coming of one education technology and then the other, then the next: "The next big thing" and "saving the world" are themes that blend and often blurred together. There is a wired magazine for every tech-savy teacher in the entire world, ar leat – or so it seems?
Yet, education is an age-old social institution, dating back much longer than our oldest schools. Without stopping to think about the more profound and much deeper issues of learning, we may have very little to say about the current issues that now confront us on a world scale. Now doubt, education is undergoing change. No doubt, the internet is eroding entire job markets and creating new ones. No doubt, some parts of the world gain, when others loose. And no doubt: Education and academic publishing are facing the same pressures on their economic models as did the music industry before it was transformed, and the film industry before it was transformed. Marshal McLuhan had that part right already in the 1950's1960's: Technologies change entire civilisations.
What we do with learning globally in our time, starts with our understanding of what learning is.
Sustainable development is equal to sustainable learning.

MAKE YOUR RESERVATION FOR 2016
WE ARE TAKING RESERVATIONS for 2016 as of October, 2015. For the details please go to the reservations page. You will find the menus at the bottom of this page, at the front page and also at the top by clicking the title WORLD LEARNING SUMMIT. Generally, we distinguish between academics, students, entrepreneurs, public officials, and business attendees. A very important goal for us is to have students and young entrepreneurs present. They are the future. And we place a small premium on other tickets to allow for this.
Yu can book either the entire package from June 13 – 16th, or either of the tracks alone, as well as just the summit open day on June 14th. The fare for the entire conference is heavily subsidised by generous donations from both the University of Agder and sponsoring partners. We welcome you to spend as much time with us as you can.
