EDUJAM theme 2019:
EXPLORING VIRTUAL REALITY IN EDUCATION
We all realize that telling a story is an aspect of knowing the context, the content, the audience and the situating of the telling. Now, with multimedia tools at our disposal, is there anything to be said for telling a story differently? A story has a plot, it has characters, settings, situations, tensions, conflicts, and resolutions to conflicts. Educational stories are no different. The difference lies in the ways audiences, stories, authors and actors interact: A book begins in one end and ends with another. A hypertextual, multimedia story is multilayered, with many different levels of storytelling goging on at the same time. Players, gamers, interactants in a multimedial story make choices, explore different options, and move from one level to another. It is a different approach.
In the WLS 2019 Edujam workshop we engage with Kommuneforlaget and their ongoing VR and AR explorations of new learning interaction narratives. The KF-approach will be presented. What is new is the ways in which the WLS 2019 Edujam participants engage to create together one particular narrative — which we call a “sustainable communication” narrative. Two cases will be brought to the table: One is a case of developing learning designs for high school on the topic of climate change, and starting with national framework plans high school studies of natural sciences. The other case takes up social studies and asks how we can co-create learning designs for the study of how to solve contemporary world conflicts caused by rising extremism.
